Buffalo’s Waterfront Is Officially on the Map
The Buffalo Waterfront is entering a new era as a Great Lakes cruise destination. Starting in 2026, American Cruise Lines will make Buffalo a port of call on its Great Lakes itineraries, docking at Canalside for the first time in decades.
History of Buffalo Cruises
Buffalo has been a vital port on the Great Lakes for nearly two centuries – from the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 to its rise as one of the busiest shipping hubs in the country. Now, after decades without passenger cruise traffic, Buffalo is once again a Great Lakes port of call.
This May through October, the American Patriot makes its debut on Buffalo's waterfront, the newest 130-guest small ship in the country, docking right at Canalside.
Coming to the Outer Harbor in 2027
A permanent cruise terminal is planned at Slip 2 on the Outer Harbor, bringing a dedicated home for Great Lakes cruising to Buffalo. Site improvements will include upgraded seawall shoring, improved public access, landscaping, customs processing facilities, and public restrooms.
